Employee of the Month
Joe Schleifer

Employee Competencies: Customer Service, Teamwork
Facilities Supervisor
Public Works
Joe has taken on the Public Works side of three major preservation projects at the Historic Park this Spring: replacing the Jail floors, shoring up the north wall of the Annie Ruth house, and replacing log courses on the Bailey house. This project began in late 2024 and resulted in the first contractor backing out. Joe took on the main PW side of this project in 2025 and was critical to bringing it to fruition. Joe worked through several additional contractors who backed out due to supply issues and scope-of-work concerns, and continued seeking contractors with experience and expertise in working with historic structures. Certain specificities and parameters come with working on historic buildings, often resulting in greater difficulties as we strive to preserve aspects of historic integrity while addressing issues, rather than taking the easiest fix. Joe worked with us on these parameters and went above and beyond to ensure each building’s historic integrity remained. This is seen with the Jail floors, where he ensured the wood would be species-matched, show similar saw markings, and be fastened with square nails to remain historically accurate. When the supply of cabin courses became an issue, Joe proposed we repurpose the logs from the Mansfield Cabin stored at the PRA. This solution not only resolved the supply issue that caused many contractors to back out, but also blended the provenance of the two historic cabins in a way seen throughout much of Frisco’s history, as the community often repurposed materials to meet current needs. Throughout this entire project, Joe has been on-site several days each week and has been readily available to the Museum. Joe has kept me informed at every step and has always asked for my professional opinion and discussion when decisions were being made. Each project required clearing out the building or room before contractors could come in. Joe lined up additional storage for the artifacts and cases because we did not have enough back-of-house space. Joe also assisted museum staff in physically relocating 300+ artifacts from these cabins, which required special handling to align with museum-field standards in collections management.
